Wedge tables: an exercise for speed reading
One of the most popular techniques for mastering the skill of speed reading are wedge-shaped tables. What it is and what task they are designed to perform, we will understand in this article.
This exercise has been known since the XX century and has been successfully used for a long time to develop the skill of speed reading. First of all, wedge tables expand your peripheral vision or to put it simply – expands your angle of vision. After practicing with wedge-shaped tables and then with wedge-shaped text you will see much wider than a normal person. In time, you can read an entire line in a book with one glance. That’s what these exercises are for – that you can read wider, and therefore much faster. This allows you to cover a larger area of the text and reduce the time it takes to master it.

Most elementary school age children are able to read about one word at a time. The average adult speed is up to 25 words per minute. This is very low for effective learning. Modern realities require quick adaptation to reality and lightning-fast absorption of new information. Having successfully mastered the skill of speed reading you and your child will acquire a lot of advantages:
- you will be able to read phenomenally fast;
- pump up your mind: improve memory, attention, logical thinking, etc;
- get a rich vocabulary;
- improve your diction;
- you will be able to express your thoughts clearly.
The benefits of practicing with wedge-shaped tables for adults and children:
- Improved academic performance;
- increase in self-esteem;
- development of speech, memory, attention;
- qualitative processing of information.
Miraculous metamorphoses are achieved by widening the angle of vision, in which special exercises help. One of the most widespread and popular methods is wedge-shaped tables for speed reading.

What do these tables come in?
Exercise and wedge tables themselves come in a variety of forms. First of all, vertical or horizontal. Color or black-and-white, numerical or alphabetic, syllabic – where you have to make up a word by syllables. We work more with vertical tables in color and black and white, with numbers and syllables. Now we’ll break it down in detail.
Horizontal wedge table
Horizontal wedge-shaped table is shown below on the picture in black and white color consisting of numbers. How to work with this table – you simply lead your gaze from left to right in the center of the table itself, where the numbers from 1 to 18 are located. Keep your gaze only on these numbers in the center and try to read the numbers below and above with your side vision.

Vertical wedge table The vertical
wedge table is a bit like the horizontal wedge table – only here we work with our eyes from top to bottom. The picture below shows a table consisting of numbers in black and a colored table consisting of syllables to be put together.
We keep our gaze on the center of the table and gradually lower it down, with our side vision we should notice and put together the syllables on the sides. The first term consists of such syllables – BA-CK, then CA-KE and so on! Looking only at the center, widen the angle of vision in this way. It is not always possible to read the whole table from the first time – that’s okay – you need to train gradually. An easier variant of the vertical table is the dashes or dots that go from the center and help to lead the gaze from the center – as shown on the digital table in the picture. In our speed reading course, these exercises are given gradually by level of difficulty – from easy to difficult.

Wedge-shaped text
This is a more complex exercise, which also develops side vision and widens the angle of vision. Here the conditions are closer to the real one – you need to read only the words that are highlighted in red – only the center of the text, and the rest of the text should be read with side vision. Example on the picture below

How to work with a wedge-shaped table?
We have already described the mechanics above, but in any case, you need your concentration in the center of the table itself – your gaze should not go to one of the sides. Everything that is to the side – you should read or try to do it with your side vision, which we train.
For toddlers, instead of numbers and letters, pictures can be used. For the very youngest, wedge-shaped tables are recommended download. It is important to choose the right time for training to avoid overwork. The first results will be noticeable after a couple of weeks of daily exercise.

Wedge-shaped tables are a type of training schemes reminiscent of the classic Schulte tables, but with gradually changing row widths, creating a “wedge-shaped” visual effect. Their purpose is to develop peripheral vision and concentration by complicating perception and searching for given elements. Working with wedge-shaped tables helps to speed up reading and increase the stability of attention.
Conclusions
First, regular use of wedge-shaped tables helps to increase the speed of information processing and improve the ability to see a wider range of objects in a single glance. Second, practicing with such charts has a compound effect on cognitive skills, including memory and the ability to shift attention quickly. Third, wedge-shaped tables are effective for both novice and experienced speed-reading practitioners, complementing other reading development techniques. Finally, integrating these tables into daily exercises increases interest and promotes more steady progress.
