Schulte Tables (Gorbova-Schulte)

The Schulte Tables were created by the German psychologist Walter Schulte in the second half of the 20th century as a tool for the development and diagnosis of attention. Later, the Soviet psychologist R. M. Gorbov proposed his own modification, called Gorbov-Schulte Tables. The main purpose of both techniques is to improve a person’s ability to hold and switch attention, expand the field of vision and increase the speed of visual information processing. They are also actively used in speed reading programs and in exercises for training peripheral vision. Through systematic training with Schulte and Gorbov-Schulte tables, people develop concentration, strengthen visual memory and improve overall cognitive productivity. The simplicity and accessibility of the techniques make them popular among both specialists and those who train on their own.

The figure below shows the most popular Schulte table size of 5 by 5 in black and white and a 6 by 6 color table

Schulte's black and white numerical table 5 by 5 and colored 6 by 6

There are also not quite standard sizes of these tables – not square, as an example it is 4×3 5×4 – we do not use such sizes in our methodology. There are very large tables for example 10×10 for adults or very small tables like 3×3.

Schulte tables for children are a small field with cells, where numbers and sometimes letters or pictures are arranged in a chaotic order. The most common size is 3×3 or 4×4. Less often there are 5×5 sizes with numbers 1-25. The goal is to consistently find all the numbers without missing a single one. The main emphasis should be on the speed of finding, which can be increased with the help of various techniques.

Schulte table exercise methodology

Your task is to find numbers or letters in the table in ascending order as quickly as possible. If these are numbers in the table 5 by 5 then you need to quickly find from 1 to 25, if they are letters then from A to C. This is the evaluation of the speed of switching attention.

The method of performing exercises on Schulte tables does not depend on their size and is always the same – you do not need to run your eyes over the whole table regardless of its size and look for numbers or letters one by one! Such an example is shown in the picture below left.

Your task is to concentrate your gaze in the very center of this table and with your side or peripheral vision look for the necessary numbers or letters in the cells of the Schulte table and mark them for yourself! Such an example is shown in the picture below on the right.

This is the only way to expand your peripheral or lateral vision and improve your attention!

Main variants of the tables

There are different variants of Schulte tables, differing both in size and content. The most common are the classic 5×5 squares with numbers from 1 to 25 in random order. However, there are also more compact versions (3×3, 4×4) for beginners or children, as well as larger tables (6×6, 7×7 and even 10×10) for more advanced training of attention and speed reading. In addition to numerical tables, tables with letters, words or even symbols and pictures are widely used – they help to diversify the exercises and make training more fun. There are also colored versions, where not only the sequence of elements is important, but also taking into account their color layout, which complicates the task and helps to develop concentration and peripheral vision even more effectively.

  • the simplest or for children – 3×3 and 4×4;
  • medium complexity – 5×5, 6×6
  • Heavy – 7×7, 8×8, 9×9 and 10×10.

The classic view is black and white. Much more complex are the colored Schulte tables for adults and children. Instead of numbers, letters can be used. The field of application is quite wide. But most often they are used:

  1. To diagnose the dynamism of attention (speed of its switching) in schoolchildren. The black-red Gorbova Schulte table is used. Also this technique is used to test machinists and other responsible professions.
  2. For the development of peripheral vision, which allows you to effectively master the technique of speed reading. Regular online training on the Schulte tables will help to significantly expand the angle of vision.

In the picture below, you can see a black and white 3 by 3 Schulte table and a 4 by 4 color table.

How to use the Schulte tables online

To understand how to use the Schulte tables and maximize the effectiveness of the exercises, it is recommended to follow the instructions.

  1. The classic 5×5 table with numbers 1-25 is recommended for beginners to adults and children. When the user has achieved perfection in this matrix, he can move to a larger format 6×6, 7×7 or then gradually aim for 9×9.
  2. At the initial stage, speed is not important. The main thing is to perform the exercise correctly.
  3. It is necessary to make sure that the eye remains focused on a single point in the center, and not chaotically moved around the cells. The purpose of the Schulte table methodology is to methodically train attention, maximize the pumping of peripheral vision, memory development. It is necessary to concentrate the eye on the central cell, trying to cover the remaining numbers in parallel with peripheral vision.
  4. It is recommended to spend 10-15 minutes for training from 3-4 times a week.
  5. If during the training there is discomfort in the eyes, the lesson should be interrupted. It means that an error was made in the technique of execution.
  6. During the use of Schulte tables online simulator the distance to the screen should be from 35 cm.

Gorbov-Schulte tables

Varieties of free Schulte table simulators

The simplest – Schulte tables for preschoolers 3×3 with large numbers. They are oriented on children who learn to count and develop the skill of speed reading.

The task of the kid is to read the numbers in both directions. At the initial stages you can use a pointer and a pencil. The pace is increased gradually.

Ask the child to look at the table for 10-15 seconds, hide it, and then show it again. The child must connect all the numbers in order and name them aloud. Criteria for evaluating the result for a child of 6 years old:

  1. One minute – brilliant, at 5;
  2. up to 70 seconds – optimal, at 4;
  3. up to 80 seconds – mediocre, 3.

The tasks in Schulte tables are more difficult for younger pupils. Evaluation of the result:

  • Up to 55 sec – 5;
  • up to 65 seconds – 4.

To get an A, an 8-year-old schoolchild needs to cope with the task in 50 seconds. A 9-year-old needs to spend 46 seconds, and a 10-year-old needs 30 seconds. Schulte tables for schoolchildren is important to change from time to time, because the kid can memorize the location of the numbers. More complex tests with a 5×5 field are used when easier ones have already been mastered. The most difficult level is the 10×10 red and black Schulte tables.

Psychologist Tony Buchan recommends printing out the Schulte tables or drawing them by hand. In this case, practicing is easier than not on a screen.

Schulte alphabetic tables and their varieties

In addition to numerical tables, there are also Schulte tables consisting of letters. The letters can be either Cyrillic or Latin – there is no difference at all! Who learned which alphabet. The picture below shows 3×3 and 5×5 black and white Schulte tables in Cyrillic alphabet.

The algorithm of actions with the tables is similar to the numerical ones. Experts believe that this variety even better allows you to develop the skill of speed reading. To successfully perform the task, you need to know the alphabetical sequence of letters. For the development of memory and attention, adults have Schulte tables in Latin.

Gorbov-Schulte Red-Black Tables

The Gorbov-Schulte Red-Black Tables are a special modification of the classical Schulte tables, in which numbers (or other elements) have two contrasting colors: red and black. Unlike conventional variants, where you only need to find numbers sequentially, in red-black tables you need to switch between red and black elements alternately. This increased complexity increases the load on cognitive processes, especially on mental flexibility and the ability to switch attention quickly. Additionally, these tables train impulsivity control, as the participant has to restrain automatic reactions and strictly follow the given color sequence. As a result of regular exercise, a person not only develops perceptual speed and peripheral vision, but also strengthens concentration and cognitive control skills.

This variation of the test is a 7×7 field. There are 25 numbers in the black cells and 24 numbers in the red cells. Less often used in Schulte tables colored numbers. The task is to find numbers in black cells in ascending order, and in red cells in descending order. Performing the task allows you to assess the speed with which attention is switched. The optimal time is 1.5 minutes. During training, speed reading skills and perceptual speed are developed.
